ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: Recurrent depressive disorder (RDD) is relevant due to its frequency, prognostic impact, and burden on the healthcare system, highlighting the need for updated epidemiological information on related hospital discharges.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the hospital discharge rate for RDD in healthcare facilities in Chile from 2021 to 2024.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study based on data from the DEIS of the Ministry of Health and the INE. Hospital discharges of individuals aged 20 years and older with a primary diagnosis of RDD (ICD-10 F33.0–F33.9) between 2021 and 2024 were included. Sex, age group, primary discharge diagnosis, and length of hospital stay were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and crude rates per 100,000 inhabitants.
RESULTS: A total of 1,226 hospital discharges were recorded, with an overall rate of 2.19 per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest rate was observed in 2024 (2.80) and the lowest in 2022 (1.89). Women had a higher rate than men (2.90 vs. 1.42). The 20–44-year age group had the highest rate (2.61), while those aged 80 years and older had the lowest (0.63). The mean length of stay was 15.59 days, excluding three exceptionally prolonged stays. The most frequent diagnosis was recurrent depressive disorder, severe episode without psychotic symptoms (34.91%).
CONCLUSION: Hospital discharges were more frequent among women and individuals aged 20–44 years, with severe episodes without psychotic symptoms predominating. These findings provide useful information to guide mental health strategies.
