Abstract:
Introduction: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy and the leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide. Objective: To determine the hospital discharge rate (HDR) for glaucoma in Chile between 2021 and 2024. Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study based on data from the Department of Health Statistics and Information (DEIS) and the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The HDR for glaucoma was analyzed considering variables such as sex, age group, and length of hospital stay. Ethics committee approval was not required due to the use of publicly available data. Results: The highest HDR was observed in 2021 (1.30) and the lowest in 2023 (1.01) per 100,000 inhabitants. Men showed a higher HDR (1.22). The 65–79 age group had the highest rate (3.94). The average hospital stay was 5.75 days. Discussion: Glaucoma shows low hospital discharge rates, consistent with its predominantly outpatient management. Length of stay was higher than reported in other countries and varied between years, possibly due to case complexity and post-pandemic effects. The study is representative, although limited by the use of population projections. Conclusion: The HDR for glaucoma in Chile remained low but relatively stable between 2021 and 2024, with a predominance in men and in older adults, and a longer hospital stay than reported in other international series, findings that could support strengthening early detection through teleophthalmology and Primary Ophthalmologic Care Units (UAPO).
