MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal.
ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: Aortic valve stenosis (EA) is the most common valve disease and possesses high morbi-mortality, but it is understudied in Chilean population. Thus, it was decided to calculate the hospital discharge rate (TEH) related to aortic valve stenosis during the 2020-2023 period in Chile.
METHODS: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. EA-associated-TEH was determined in patients over 20 years old, during the 2020-2023 period in Chile, according to variables of sex, age, valvular heart disease and hospital stay. Data was obtained from the Statistics, Information and Health Information Department, and from the National Statistics Institute; it was processed using Microsoft Office Excel. No evaluation from an ethics committee was needed.
RESULTS: 7,039 hospital discharges were studied, thereby resulting in a period TEH of 13.74 cases/100,000 habitants, with a tendency to rise. A higher TEH was observed in male sex and in senior patients. 9.42% of all cases presented with valvular heart disease. The average hospital stay was 11.68 days, being longer in men and patients between 45-64 years of age.
DISCUSSION: The increase in TEH could be associated to population aging and compromised patients having more access to surgery. Results in men and patients older than 80 years of age are in line with what is expected physiopathologically. Fluctuations in average hospital stay may be related to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
CONCLUSION: Chile’s demographic transition and epidemiology justify more research on EA. It is necessary to consider the impact of COVID-19 in healthcare systems.
