ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Inguinal hernias are a common condition with potentially life-threatening complications. The objective was to determine the mortality rate (MR) due to inguinal hernias in patients aged 45 and over between 2016 and 2023 in Chile.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the mortality rate due to inguinal hernias in Chile between 2016 and 2023. Variables analyzed included sex, age, region, laterality, complication, and place of death.

RESULTS: A total of 526 deaths due to inguinal hernias were analyzed. The MR for the period was 1.01 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, with an excess male mortality rate of 2.11. The 45-64 age group had the lowest MR, with 0.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest TM was observed in Coquimbo, with 1.86 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. "Inguinal or unspecified hernia with obstruction without gangrene" accounts for 60.65% of deaths. The majority of these occurred in public hospitals and private clinics (70.97%).

DISCUSSION: TM in Chile and excess male mortality are consistent with global figures. The exponential increase in those over 80 years of age would reflect population aging as a key factor in the burden of the disease.

CONCLUSION: In Chile, TMs occur similar to those described internationally. However, despite the advances and knowledge acquired in the country, further studies are needed to determine risk factors that increase TM in those over 80 years of age.

Keyword: inguinal, hernia, mortality rate.
