Materiales y Métodos: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal.
Abstract
Introduction: Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies worldwide. Without timely treatment, it can progress to perforation, peritonitis, and sepsis, increasing mortality.
Objectives: To determine the mortality rate (MR) from acute appendicitis in Chile between 2017 and 2023, and to describe its distribution by year, sex, age group, and region.
Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. Data were obtained from the Department of Statistics and Health Information (DEIS) and the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Deaths with ICD-10 codes K352, K353, K358, and K37X were included. Mortality rates were calculated per 100,000 inhabitants.
Results: A total of 225 deaths due to acute appendicitis were recorded in Chile from 2017 to 2023. The average MR was 0.18 per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest MR occurred in 2018 (0.24), and the lowest in 2023 (0.14). Males had a higher MR (0.23) than females (0.14). The highest rate by age group was observed in individuals aged 65–79 years (0.46). Aysén and Atacama were the regions with the highest mortality rates.
Conclusion: Although mortality from acute appendicitis in Chile is low, significant differences exist by sex, age, and region. Older adults and people living in remote areas are particularly vulnerable. Improving timely access to diagnosis and surgical treatment could further reduce mortality.
