Abstract

Background: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a liver disease with acute or chronic presentation and an unknown etiology, representing a clinical and diagnostic challenge due to its similarity to other forms of hepatitis. Although its incidence is low, early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to improve patient outcomes.

Objective: To analyze national records of autoimmune hepatitis and describe its epidemiological distribution in Chile.

Methods: Descriptive, observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study based on statistical data obtained from the Departamento de Estadísticas e Información de Salud (DEIS).

Results: Between 2018 and 2024, a total of 2317 hospital discharges due to AIH were recorded. Women accounted for 77.3% of cases, while the 20–59-year age group represented 57% of all diagnoses. The Metropolitan Region concentrated the highest number of cases. In addition, an average hospital case fatality rate rate of 3.3% was observed, together with an upward trend in annual hospital discharge rate, reaching its highest value in 2024.

Conclusion: Autoimmune hepatitis in Chile presents an epidemiological pattern characterized by a higher frequency in adults aged 20 to 59 years. Likewise, a marked female predominance was observed, consistent with the epidemiological behavior of the disease internationally.

Key Words: Hepatitis; Autoimmunity; Epidemiology; Mortality; Patient Discharge.
